West Northamptonshire Council to install 3,000 on‑street EV charging points

West Northamptonshire Council has appointed charge point operator Char. gy to deliver more than 3,000 on‑street electric‑vehicle charging sockets across the district. The rollout is funded by the UK Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, with £2.85 million of public money complemented by private investment, and is set to begin in mid‑2026.

The programme targets residents who lack off‑street parking or home chargers, using lamp‑column units and an evidence‑based site‑selection process that also incorporates resident suggestions. The council is working with parish councils to identify optimal locations and will apply competitive user tariffs to keep charging affordable. Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister Keir Mather highlighted the funding’s role in removing charging barriers, while Cllr Nigel Stansfield called the project a "transformative investment" for the area’s future.

Char. gy CEO John Lewis said the initiative will make a real difference for people without driveways, bringing charging closer to where they live without major disruption.
