West Pacific geopolitics shift amid US-China competition and North Korean diplomacy

Geopolitical tensions are shifting in the West Pacific as the strategic competition between the United States and China intensifies. Key flashpoints include Taiwan, where China continues to increase military and political pressure, and the South China Sea, where confrontations between China and the Philippines—a formal U.S. ally—pose a risk of escalation into a larger crisis.

In a notable diplomatic shift, the United States has reduced the scale of major military exercises on the Korean Peninsula. This move follows North Korea’s strengthened alliance with Russia and its demonstrated military capabilities. U.S. President Donald Trump characterized the previous large-scale exercises as sending an “inappropriate and hostile signal” to a country that had behaved respectfully during his presidency.
