Pacific Islands Forum prepares for upcoming leaders meeting in Palau

As the Pacific Islands Forum prepares for its 55th Leaders Meeting in Palau, regional leaders are emphasizing the need for unity and self-determination. Outgoing Forum Chair and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale has called for member nations to stand united as the ‘Blue Pacific Continent’ to navigate increasing geopolitical pressures and ensure external partners engage on the region’s own terms.

In preparation for the summit, Australia has announced a comprehensive assistance package for Palau. This support includes logistical and financial aid, cybersecurity assistance through the Cyber RAPID program, and the deployment of approximately 120 Pacific police officers under the Pacific Policing Initiative to ensure security for the event.

Other regional developments include the inaugural Papua New Guinea–Solomon Islands Investment Conference in Honiara, aimed at strengthening bilateral economic ties. Additionally, Papua New Guinea’s Foreign Minister indicated that the West Papua issue is expected to be on the agenda for the upcoming leaders' meeting in Palau, following its absence from recent ministerial discussions.
