West Sumatra Governor promotes gemstone tradition as Minangkabau cultural heritage

West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah has expressed full support for preserving the gemstone tradition as a vital part of Minangkabau art and culture. Speaking at the opening of the Governor's Cup Gemstone Exhibition and Contest, titled 'Kearifan Lokal Tanah Minang', in Padang on October 31, 2026, Mahyeldi emphasized that these stones hold historical, philosophical, and identity-based value for the community.

He noted that for the Minangkabau people, gemstones are more than mere jewelry; they represent maturity, greatness, and artistic taste. The intricate process of selecting, processing, and carving stones reflects ancestral philosophies and fine artistry. The Governor aims to use such exhibitions to introduce these cultural values to younger generations to ensure the tradition is not lost to modern developments.

The event, organized by Gamestone Minang Saiyo, included a contest featuring 185 classes with participants from various regions.
