West Sumatra Governor supports protective pier for Tiku fishermen
West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah has expressed support for the construction of a protective pier at the Pasir Tiku Fish Auction Site in Agam Regency. During a direct dialogue with local fishermen on September 21, 2026, the Governor emphasized that providing safety facilities is essential for both the lives of fishermen and the sustainability of their livelihoods.
Local fishermen reported that the lack of a safe harbor leaves their traditional wooden fishing platforms, or 'bagan', vulnerable to damage or grounding during high waves. One fisherman noted that four platforms had already run aground within the first eight months of the year due to worsening sea conditions. The community has proposed the construction of a permanent concrete pier to serve as a refuge.
In addition to the pier, fishermen requested the establishment of an ice factory to maintain the quality of their catch. Governor Mahyeldi has instructed the West Sumatra Marine and Fisheries Service to coordinate with the central government and relevant parties to find solutions for these infrastructure needs.
