West Sumatra officials launch cervical cancer prevention and HPV vaccination initiative

The West Sumatra Provincial Government and the Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) have launched a campaign to prevent cervical cancer through health education, early detection, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. The initiative aims to increase reproductive health awareness and improve the quality of life for women in the region.

According to 2025 data from the West Sumatra Health Office, 129 women aged 30–69 tested positive for HPV DNA out of 8,779 women screened. This highlights the urgent need for expanded health access and education. The national HPV immunization program specifically targets fifth-grade elementary school girls, approximately 11 years old.

Regional Secretary Arry Yuswandi emphasized that prevention is more effective than treatment, calling for support from parents, schools, and healthcare workers to ensure vaccination schedules are met. The program is a follow-up to directives from the central DWP to support women's and family health through preventive measures.
