West Surrey Council votes to rename as West Surrey and South Middlesex

The newly formed Liberal Democrat‑run West Surrey Council approved a motion on 30 July 2026 to change its name to West Surrey and South Middlesex Council. The proposal, tabled by Councillor Harry Boparai, argues that the Spelthorne area, historically part of Middlesex, should be reflected in the authority’s title.

Council leader Paul Follows said the council will write to the UK government requesting approval, with a decision sought by October. A public‑consultation request was rejected, and supporters such as astrologer Russell Grant welcomed the move, saying it restores the area’s historic identity and will prevent operational disruption when the new authority takes over services in April 2027.
