West Tamar Highway duplication completed in Legana

The Tasmanian Government has completed the duplication of the West Tamar Highway in Legana. The project, which began construction in 2024, involved adding two additional lanes in each direction between Freshwater Point Road and Acropolis Drive.

This upgrade is part of the $420 million Northern Roads Package, a joint investment by the Australian and Tasmanian governments aimed at improving the East and West Tamar Highways and the Bass Highway. The project is intended to ease congestion and improve safety for commuters, freight operators, and tourists in one of Tasmania’s fastest-growing regions.

In addition to road capacity, the project delivered new pedestrian and active transport infrastructure, including two new pedestrian crossings, a shared pathway for pedestrians and cyclists, and new bike paths at several intersections. Traffic lights at the site were activated at the end of July.
