West Territory of Réunion launches second Zero‑Waste Household Challenge for 60 families

The Territoire de l’Ouest in Réunion is rolling out the second edition of its Défi Foyers Zéro Déchet, a free six‑month programme that will support 60 households from October 2026 to March 2027. The initiative, run together with the association Zéro Déchet La Réunion, provides on‑site visits, practical workshops and personalised monitoring to help participants cut the amount of waste they generate.

Karim Juhoor, vice‑president of the Territoire de l’Ouest responsible for waste management and mayor of Saint‑Leu, highlighted the goal of shifting from a disposable mindset to a circular economy. The first edition in 2025 involved 27 families and reduced household waste from an average of 260 kg per person to about 90 kg per year, a result the organisers aim to replicate on a larger scale.

Applications for the 2026‑27 round remain open until mid‑September, and the programme aligns with the French AGEC law and the Territoire’s “Ouest 2040” development plan.
