West Virginia flooding causes school closures and street flooding

Severe thunderstorms and fast-moving weather systems caused significant flooding in Berkeley County, West Virginia, late Thursday evening. The storm resulted in flooded streets and water accumulation in areas not typically prone to flooding, such as Foxcroft Avenue.

As a result of the weather, Martinsburg High School has announced it will be closed to students on Friday, August 28, due to significant water intrusion within the building. While staff are expected to report for work, students are advised that classes at James Rumsey Technical Institute, Shepherd University, and Blue Ridge Community and Technical College may be attended at their own discretion. Additionally, the Berkeley County Fire Service Board and the Berkeley County Emergency Ambulance Authority will be closed to the public on Friday due to storm-related flooding.

In Putnam County, Eastbrook Elementary School is also closed on Friday due to ongoing utility issues. No major accidents or injuries have been reported following the storm.
