West Virginia football faces Arizona's top rushing defense
West Virginia University's football team prepares to face the Arizona Wildcats, highlighted by a matchup between the Mountaineers' high-powered rushing attack and Arizona's top-tier rushing defense. Under head coach Rich Rodriguez, West Virginia has developed one of the most effective ground games in the country, led by running back Cam Cook and dual-threat quarterback Mike Hawkins Jr.
The Mountaineers currently rank as the third-best rushing attack in the nation, trailing only the three service academies. This offensive success is supported by a significantly improved offensive line and a receiving corps capable of creating explosive plays.
Arizona enters the matchup with the third-best rushing defense in the Big 12, having recently held Cincinnati to just 74 rushing yards. Coach Rodriguez noted that if the ground game is neutralized, the team will rely on Hawkins' ability to connect with receivers downfield.
