West Virginia football staff seeks solutions for struggling defense
West Virginia University football head coach Rich Rodriguez and defensive coordinator Zac Alley are addressing significant struggles within the Mountaineers' defense. The unit currently ranks 133rd out of 138 FBS teams in total defense, allowing an average of 456.6 yards per game.
Rodriguez noted that the coaching staff is focused on better positioning players based on their specific strengths and weaknesses. He attributed some of the difficulties to high roster turnover, noting that the team has 10 new starters who are still adapting to a new system. He also cited the complexities of the transfer portal and NIL as modern challenges.
Defensive coordinator Zac Alley expressed frustration following recent performances, including a game against Iowa State where the defense allowed 45 points and 577 yards. Alley stated he intends to change his approach rather than repeating ineffective strategies, focusing on returning to basics such as stopping the run.
