West Virginia Mountaineers defense targets improved consistency

The West Virginia Mountaineers defensive unit is focused on increasing consistency and disruptiveness for the upcoming season following a challenging 4-8 finish in 2025. Defensive coordinator Zac Alley noted that the unit struggled with consistency, often oscillating between strong performances and allowing high scores, including a Big 12-worst average of 36.2 points allowed per game in conference play.

To improve, the defense relies on a mix of experienced leaders and new talent. Senior linebacker Ben Cutter, the unit’s most experienced player and a top tackler from last season, aims to use previous struggles as motivation. On the defensive line, Nate Gabriel is expected to take on an expanded role as a full-time starter and vocal leader.

While returners like Gabriel and Corey McIntyre Jr. provide continuity, much of the defensive front will feature new players. The coaching staff has emphasized that the success of the unit depends on these newcomers proving their physicality and ability to generate a consistent pass rush.
