West Virginia pushes blockchain and cryptocurrency for economic growth

West Virginia officials and lobbyists are promoting cryptocurrency and blockchain technology as drivers for economic growth. Despite the state ranking among the poorest in the nation and facing broadband infrastructure challenges, the 2026 legislative session saw significant movement regarding digital asset policy.

Lawmakers passed two key bills: one regulating cryptocurrency automated teller machines and the “DUNA” law. Other proposals, such as Senate Bill 560 sponsored by Senator Brian Helton, sought to recognize stablecoins as a legitimate currency for state government transactions, allowing the state to make payments to vendors and contractors using digital assets pegged to traditional fiat currencies.
