West Virginia University Assumes Full Ownership of University Place Housing

The West Virginia University Board of Governors settled a 2024 lawsuit concerning the University Place student‑housing complex. Under the negotiated resolution, WVU will assume full ownership of the development, with no changes expected for current student residents.

The settlement dismisses all pending claims and counterclaims, terminates the existing ground lease and related subleases, retires the project financing, and includes mutual releases among the parties. The agreement is intended to keep University Place integrated into WVU’s student housing inventory.

University Place opened in 2015 as WVU‑managed upper‑class housing, adding a parking garage later that year. The lawsuit alleged that funds had been improperly transferred and concealed, citing breach of contract, fraud and related accusations. As part of earlier restructuring, about 450 beds in the South Tower were converted into a first‑year residence hall now called Seneca Hall.
