West Virginia University athletics push for national rules amid record fundraising

College athletics leaders at West Virginia University are urging Congress to pass the bipartisan Protect College Sports Act, a federal framework intended to create consistent national standards for Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) agreements, health protections and educational support for student‑athletes. The proposal seeks to replace the current patchwork of state laws and court decisions that have left institutions operating under differing rules.

At the same time, WVU Athletics announced a historic fundraising year for FY26, reporting a record $111 million in philanthropic support—nearly three times the previous single‑year high of $38 million. The Mountaineer Athletic Club grew to 7,934 members, and the newly launched Championship Resource Fund contributed more than $5.5 million in its first year. "The numbers speak for themselves," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker.

These developments highlight both the financial momentum of WVU’s sports programs and the broader push for uniform policy to sustain the long‑term health of college athletics.
