United States 2026 midterm elections approach

The United States is preparing for the 2026 midterm elections on November 3, which will determine the composition of the 120th Congress. The elections involve 435 seats in the House of Representatives, approximately one-third of the Senate, and 36 governorships. The results will significantly impact President Donald Trump’s ability to advance his legislative agenda during the second half of his term.

Currently, Republicans hold a slim majority in the House with 218 seats and 53 seats in the Senate. Democrats are seeking to reclaim control of one or both chambers. If the Senate results in a 50-50 split, Vice President J.D. Vance would maintain Republican control via tie-breaking votes. A Democratic takeover of the Senate would grant them influence over judicial appointments, including the Supreme Court.

Early voting is seeing record activity. In Georgia, early in-person voting has surpassed 1 million ballots. Nationally, political advertisement spending has exceeded $3.8 billion. High-profile donors have also made significant contributions, including Elon Musk, who has directed approximately $366 million toward Republican interests, and Michael Bloomberg, who has contributed $80 million toward Democratic candidates.
