Westbahn to launch direct rail connection between Spittal and Vienna
Starting December 13, 2026, the railway company Westbahn will extend its southern route to provide a direct connection between Spittal an der Drau and Vienna. One of the five daily connections between Vienna and Villach will be extended to Spittal, marking the first time Upper Carinthia has been directly linked to the capital.
The new schedule includes a morning departure from Spittal at 07:40, arriving at Vienna Main Station at 11:45, and a return trip departing Vienna at 16:15, arriving in Spittal at 20:20. The total travel time is 4 hours and 5 minutes. The service is intended to benefit tourists, particularly those visiting the Millstätter See region, as well as business travelers and commuters.
While the expansion connects the Millstätter See tourism destination alongside the Wörthersee and Klopeiner See, Westbahn confirmed that plans to extend the line further to Lienz in East Tyrol are currently on hold, though the company maintains its long-term goal to reach that location.
