Westbeemster historic building demolition halted after developer withdrawal

The future of the historic De Kerckhaen building in Westbeemster remains uncertain following the withdrawal of project developer DJZN. The developer's exit has halted plans to demolish the building to make way for a new complex featuring a B&B, a restaurant, and a new community center.

While the withdrawal is viewed as a victory for the activist group ‘Vrienden van De Kerckhaen’, which campaigned to preserve the historic structure, the outcome has left local stakeholders in a state of limbo. Nico de Lange, chairman of Stichting De Kerckhaen, stated that the demolition was considered necessary for the foundation's survival, noting that they have spent twenty years maintaining the building.

Conversely, members of the activist group expressed disappointment regarding the lack of dialogue, though they maintain that reports suggest the building does not require demolition to remain functional.
