Massachusetts lawmakers and residents seek moratorium on Amazon drone deliveries
A group of 16 Massachusetts lawmakers has requested Governor Maura Healey implement an indefinite moratorium on processing applications for commercial drone delivery operators. The request aims to trigger a comprehensive review of the state’s existing regulatory framework for unmanned aircraft.
In Westborough, a Special Town Meeting voted 510-13 to establish local regulations for unmanned aircraft to protect public safety, privacy, and quality of life. This local action follows Amazon’s proposal to deliver Prime Air packages weighing under five pounds within a 7.5-mile radius of its Westborough fulfillment center.
While Amazon has received FAA approval to operate as an air carrier, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Aeronautics Division has clarified that the company must still obtain state-level approval for takeoff and landing sites. MassDOT noted that it has not yet received an official request for review and must still evaluate potential safety threats and environmental impacts. Residents have raised concerns regarding noise, nuisance, and the risks of low-altitude flights over private property.
