Westbrook Studios develops ‘215’ series about Will Smith’s rap origins

Westbrook Studios, the production company co-founded by Will Smith, is developing a new scripted series titled ‘215’. The project is a collaboration with The Malar Group and marks the first production under their new partnership to develop a slate of film and television projects.

The series is inspired by the early musical career of Will Smith and his partnership with Jeffrey Townes, known as DJ Jazzy Jeff. Set in West Philadelphia during the late 1980s, the show will dramatize the rise of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince. The plot follows a quick-witted teenage rapper and his DJ best friend as they navigate the local music scene, chase record deals, and deal with the complexities of sudden fame and industry challenges.

The title ‘215’ refers to the historical area code for Philadelphia. While the characters are inspired by Smith and Townes, the production is described as a fictionalized account rather than a literal biography. No creative team, release date, or streaming platform has been announced yet.
