Western Attica Suburban Railway project to continue with EU recovery funding
Greece's Western Attica Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) will proceed and be completed with resources from the European Union Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The earlier withdrawal of the RRF allocation was caused by unforeseen technical, licensing, administrative and court‑related difficulties that delayed works.
The contract for the project remains active and 53% of the physical works—equivalent to €56.13 million (net of VAT)—have already been finished. A revised financing plan supplies the required time to address the outstanding issues, while preserving the total EU fund amount earmarked for Greece. Reallocated EU resources are being applied to other mature projects.
Greek ministries of National Economy & Finance and Infrastructure & Transport have confirmed the continuation and eventual completion of the railway, which is part of the National Development Programme 2026‑2030. A political dispute arose when PASOK MP Pavlos Geroulanos claimed the government had asked for the project's removal from the RRF, a point later clarified by officials.
