Western Australia advances $107M electric ferry expansion

The Western Australian State Government is proceeding with a $107 million Metronet Swan ferry service expansion, despite local opposition. The Public Transport Authority (PTA) has applied to operate five new fully electric ferries to link Elizabeth Quay, Matilda Bay, and Applecross.

Two new terminals are planned for Matilda Bay and Applecross. The PTA intends to use zero-emission electric propulsion technology, which they claim will be quieter and reduce risks to marine fauna compared to diesel vessels. The service is expected to run every 25 minutes between 6 am and midnight, with a full return loop taking approximately 75 minutes.

While the project faces protests regarding the clearing of native seagrass and microalgae, Environment Minister Matthew Swinbourn has dismissed appeals against the approval. A $66 million contract to design and build the vessels was previously awarded to the Henderson-based Echo Marine Group. Additionally, $10 million has been committed toward technical studies to potentially extend the service to Burswood, Belmont, Rivervale, and Maylands.
