Western Australia AFL fans urged to back Fremantle over West Coast
A former West Coast Eagles supporter argued that, with the Eagles out of finals, their fans should consider supporting the rival Fremantle Dockers. The suggestion sparked a strong reaction, generating more than 2,000 comments on social media, many accusing the author of betraying the Eagles.
The author cited former Dockers captain Nat Fyfe’s 2018 comment that some Fremantle supporters would cheer for Collingwood over West Coast, and highlighted the deep community roots of current Dockers players—Jye Amiss, Luke Jackson, Andrew Brayshaw, Shai Bolton, Jordan Clark, Heath Chapman, and Justin Longmuir—all products of Western Australian towns and junior clubs. Historical ties were also noted, recalling that several key members of the Eagles' 1992 and 1994 premiership sides hailed from Fremantle. The piece concluded that while rivalry is inherent in sport, admiration for success across club lines can be justified.
