Western Australia allocates $58.6 million for Collie Basin coal transition

The Western Australian government has unveiled the Collie Basin blueprint, a plan to transition the mining region away from coal dependency. The initiative includes $58.6 million in funding to bolster energy supply, industry, and jobs while managing the decline of the coal sector.

The funding is divided into several key areas: $39 million for industrial infrastructure, including roads, power, and water; $16.8 million for workforce support, specifically for retraining, redeployment, and redundancies; and $2.8 million for a rehabilitation and future land-use master plan. Premier Roger Cook stated that the plan prioritizes energy security and workforce transition, noting that the community must remain at the center of the shift.

As demand for fossil fuels dwindles, the government is discussing potential mergers or acquisitions involving Griffin Coal and Premier Coal. The master plan aims to identify assets that can be repurposed after mine closures to mitigate the high costs of long-term rehabilitation.
