Western Australia approves Lloyd Street Bridge to ease freight congestion

Western Australian Transport Minister Rita Saffioti confirmed that an agreement with Traditional Owners has been reached on design principles for the Lloyd Street Bridge in Midland. The 180‑metre multi‑span bridge will cross most of the Helena River floodplain, with supporting piers positioned away from culturally sensitive sites, reducing the project footprint and vegetation clearing by about 20 %.

The bridge will carry two traffic lanes in each direction plus dedicated paths for pedestrians and cyclists, linking Midland directly to the Hazelmere Industrial Area. By completing the Lloyd Street link between Great Eastern Highway and the Great Eastern Highway Bypass, the project is expected to improve freight and commercial traffic flow, relieve pressure on local roads, and support future upgrades such as the proposed Roe Highway interchange. Construction could start before the end of 2026, following detailed design and site investigations. Midland MLA Steve Catania highlighted the bridge’s role in regional growth and transport access.
