Western Australia begins $543M renewal of CY O’Connor water pipeline
The Western Australian government has commenced a $543 million project to renew the historic Perth to Kalgoorlie water pipeline. The works involve replacing 44.5 kilometres of the original 566-kilometre pipeline, which was designed by engineer CY O’Connor.
The upgrade aims to increase water pumping capacity by 10 per cent. Additionally, the project will double the capacity of the Binduli Reservoir from 400 million litres to 800 million litres. Water Minister Daniel Pastorelli stated that from 2027, the project will deliver an extra 7.2 million litres of water to the Goldfields daily.
The infrastructure renewal addresses a 16 per cent increase in water demand in the Goldfields over the last five years. Currently, the Kalgoorlie mining industry faces challenges due to a lack of commercial water supply, as the existing pipeline is designated for drinking water only. The new pipeline sections, which will run through the shires of Westonia, Merredin, and Yilgarn, are being manufactured locally and are expected to last up to 150 years.
