Western Australia child protection: Calls for inquest grow
Federal Indigenous Australians Minister Malarndirri McCarthy has expressed support for Dorothy Papertalk, a grandmother seeking a coronial inquest into the 2022 deaths of her three grandchildren in Port Hedland, Western Australia. The children were killed by their mother, Margaret Dale Hawke, who is currently serving a life sentence.
Calls for increased scrutiny of child protection services have intensified following reports of over a dozen children living unsupervised in squalor in South Hedland. In response, Aboriginal Elders are demanding a Royal Commission into the state's child protection agency and the resignation of Child Protection Minister Jessica Stojkovski.
Despite the growing political pressure, Western Australia Attorney-General Tony Buti stated that a coroner's decision not to hold an inquest cannot be overruled without the presentation of fresh evidence.
