Western Australia records best wildflower bloom in nearly 20 years
Western Australia is experiencing a significant wildflower bloom, with the Mid West region recording its best season in nearly two decades. Early winter rains, including downpours from Cyclone Mitchell in February, triggered the germination of a dormant seed bank, allowing various species to sprout simultaneously.
At the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, the variety of blooms has been noted by land management staff, who observe flowers growing near the radio telescopes. The observatory's land management team works with biodiversity experts to monitor species; these efforts have previously helped reclassify certain protected wildflowers, such as the Calandrinia, by tracing new populations.
Key wildflower hotspots in the state include Kalbarri National Park, Coalseam Conservation Park, Lesueur National Park, John Forrest National Park, and Cape Le Grand National Park.
