A 56-year-old surfer, identified as Mel Ismail, was hospitalized with serious leg injuries following a shark attack at Glenfield Beach in Western Australia. The incident occurred on Monday morning approximately 40 meters offshore, north of Geraldton.

Authorities, including the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, are investigating the incident. While the specific species and size of the shark remain unconfirmed, investigators are examining bite marks on a damaged surfboard to help identify the animal. The victim is reported to be in a “serious but stable condition.”

Local authorities and Surf Life Saving WA have advised beachgoers to exercise extreme caution in the area. This attack follows a series of shark-related incidents in Australia this year, including four fatal attacks. Scientists suggest that rising ocean temperatures and increased human presence in coastal waters may be contributing to shifting shark migratory patterns.
