Western Australia supports mandatory train lighting legislation

The Western Australian Government has announced its support for the Rail Safety National Law Application Amendment (Rolling Stock Lighting) Bill 2026. This Private Member’s Bill aims to establish minimum visibility standards for trains, including the use of flashing warning beacons and side lighting to improve detection by motorists at level crossings.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti stated she has advocated for a national approach to enhanced train lighting to ensure consistency and interoperability across state borders. The government intends to propose amendments following consultations with unions, industry groups, and users to ensure the legislation is workable. A proposed five-year compliance period is being considered, aligning with the national rail regulator’s Code of Practice regarding train visibility at level crossings.
