Western Cape road closures as strong winds hit South Africa

Severe weather and gale-force winds in South Africa's Western Cape have caused significant disruptions to major transport routes. The Huguenot Tunnel on the N1 has been closed to all vehicles due to dangerous crosswinds. Additionally, the Du Toitskloof Pass via the R101 has been closed to all traffic after two trucks were blown over by the wind.

SANRAL has warned motorists traveling between Paarl and Worcester that sections of the N1 may face intermittent closures. The agency monitors wind speeds at Hugo’s Viaduct, where gusts can reach dangerous levels, and may restrict lightly loaded goods vehicles or vehicles towing high-sided trailers and caravans.

Authorities have advised motorists to use the R43 via Ceres and Wolseley as an alternative route and to avoid Bainskloof Pass if traveling in heavy motor vehicles. The South African Weather Service continues to issue warnings for severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and damaging winds across several provinces.
