Western Cape sees two mass shootings in consecutive days

On 16 May 2026 a mass shooting in Wesbank, Strandveld Street, Western Cape, left four adults dead and a 7‑year‑old child seriously injured. Police arrived at about 8 pm and declared the victims deceased on scene; a child was taken to hospital for treatment. The Western Cape South African Police Service (SAPS) opened murder and attempted murder cases and said the attack may be gang‑related, but no arrests have been made.

The following day, 17 May 2026, another shooting occurred in a home on Jakaranda Street, Groendal, Franschhoek, also in the Western Cape. Three men, aged between 30 and 35, were shot dead and a woman and another man were injured. SAPS confirmed the incident involved two armed suspects who forced entry and opened fire in broad daylight. The Provincial Serious Violent Crimes unit is leading the investigation, and police have appealed for information, noting concerns about illegal firearms and gang violence in the region.

Both incidents have heightened public alarm over violent crime in the Western Cape, with authorities urging any witnesses to come forward as investigations continue.
