Western Cape shootings kill five in Gugulethu, with further attacks in Kayamandi and Manenberg
In the early hours of 27 July, armed men forced entry into a home in Gugulethu, Western Cape, and shot dead five young people – four men and one woman aged 19 to 23 – while a 20‑year‑old woman survived with injuries. Police say two unidentified suspects demanded a firearm before opening fire and fled the scene. Acting Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Major General Luyanda Damoyi condemned the attack and ordered detectives to pursue all leads.
Separate incidents on the same day were reported in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, where four men were found dead and two SAPS officers and two civilians were injured after gunfire sparked a confrontation with armed suspects. A 9 mm pistol was seized for forensic analysis. In Manenberg (Pecos Walk), two men aged 38 and 54 were fatally wounded and a 74‑year‑old woman was injured. Police spokesperson André Traut confirmed murder investigations are underway for all three shootings.
