Western Digital highlights rising AI-driven demand for data storage
A global survey sponsored by Western Digital and conducted by IDC reveals that AI adoption is driving a structural increase in data storage requirements. While AI discussions often focus on compute performance, the research highlights that the continuous accumulation of data—including synthetic data, inference results, and model logs—is creating a compounding growth cycle for storage needs.
Key findings from the IDC white paper indicate that 94.7% of surveyed companies reported an increase in stored data due to AI and generative AI implementation over the past 12 months. Furthermore, 74.3% of companies noted that data retention periods have lengthened, and 75.9% are increasingly bringing archived cold data back online to support AI workloads.
Western Digital CEO Irving Tang noted that while compute requirements fluctuate with investment cycles, the need for a foundation to manage and utilize massive datasets will continue to rise. This shift suggests that AI infrastructure design must prioritize storage capacity, accessibility, and total cost of ownership (TCO) across the entire data lifecycle.
