Western Greece launches €4.8 million flood defence projects on Evinos and Achelous rivers

On 13 July 2026 the Governor of the Western Greece Region, Nektarios Pharmakis, signed two contracts worth a total of €4.8 million to carry out flood‑prevention works on the Evinos and Achelous rivers in Aetolia‑Acarnania. Funding comes from the Special Programme for Natural Disasters and targets areas that suffered severe damage in the August 2025 wildfires, which destroyed river‑bank vegetation and left the banks exposed to erosion.

The projects will clean approximately 4.2 km of river banks of burned debris, reinforce the banks with rock‑fill, repair damaged wire‑mesh structures, and open spillway channels to improve water flow. Specific works will protect the villages of Pentalofo, Neochori and Katohi and safeguard key road sections such as the Neochori bypass of the provincial road Aetolia–Astakos and the Parapionia road.
