Western Greece reports significant decline in primary school enrollment

Data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) reveals a notable decrease in student enrollment across Western Greece for the 2024/2025 school year. The number of children enrolled in primary schools in the region fell by 917 compared to the previous year, a 2.7% decline that exceeds the national average decrease of 2.3%.

Total enrollment in kindergartens and primary schools in Western Greece dropped to 33,272 from 34,189. While primary school numbers saw a sharp decline, kindergarten enrollment remained relatively stable, decreasing by only six students (0.1%), which is more resilient than the 1.4% national decline in the same category.

In addition to lower enrollment, the region saw a 6.3% decrease in primary school graduates, with 5,537 graduates compared to 5,912 the previous year. The reduction in student numbers has also led to a decrease in the number of active school units in the region.
