Western Kenya farmers shift to poultry and goats amid declining crop returns

Farmers in Western Kenya are increasingly transitioning from traditional crops like sugarcane, maize, cassava, and cotton to poultry and goat farming. This shift is driven by declining returns from traditional agriculture caused by fluctuating commodity prices, unreliable markets, and unpredictable weather patterns.

During an exhibition organized by the Kenya Livestock Commercialisation Project (KELCOP) in Busia, officials noted that farmers embracing livestock have seen significant income increases, with some reporting gains of up to 500 per cent. Beyond financial benefits, poultry farming has improved household food security and nutrition through increased access to eggs.
