Western Macedonia to launch 7 million euro Innovation Zone

A 7 million euro project has been approved under the ‘Just Transition 2021-2027’ program to establish and operate six Living Labs in Western Macedonia. These labs will serve as the foundation for a new Innovation Zone in the region, designed to allow businesses, researchers, public administration, and citizens to co-create and test innovative solutions in real-world conditions.

The project, coordinated by the Western Macedonia Regional Development Fund, is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2029. The initiative utilizes a ‘test–before–invest’ model to help companies validate technologies before committing to full-scale investments.

The six specialized laboratories include:

• Cleantech Living Lab (Ptolemaida): Focused on clean technologies and the green transition. • AgroVine Living Lab (Florina): Dedicated to agri-food and viticulture. • Mountainous Areas Living Lab (Grevena): Providing services for mountainous regions. • Lakes Living Lab (Kastoria): Focused on the protection and utilization of lake resources. • RESALLIENCE Living Lab (Kozani): Aimed at the resilience of energy infrastructure and the restoration of lignite soils. • SMART Living Lab (Kozani): Managed by the University of Western Macedonia, focusing on smart technologies and business services.
