Western Macedonia transitions from coal to AI and renewable energy
The World Economic Forum has highlighted the transformation of Western Macedonia, Greece, describing the region's shift as a journey ‘from coal to AI’. For decades, the area served as a primary energy hub through lignite mining, but it is now navigating the consequences of decarbonization, including shifts in employment and population.
To address these changes, the Public Power Corporation (PPC) is implementing a plan to convert the region into a digital and energy hub. Key investments include solar and hydroelectric projects, energy storage, and the development of large-scale data centers. This strategy aims to build a new economic model based on renewable energy and the digital economy.
Nikos Davos of CLuBE noted the international visibility of this transition but raised critical questions regarding the long-term benefits for the local community. He emphasized that success depends on creating high-quality jobs, ensuring local businesses participate in new value chains, and making sure the residents of Western Macedonia are primary beneficiaries of these investments rather than mere spectators.
