Western security and political stability face growing challenges

The West faces significant internal and external pressures, according to analyses of current geopolitical shifts. In his book ‘Der gelähmte Westen’ (The Paralyzed West), Ferdinand Knauss argues that the West is experiencing a decline driven by authoritarian powers and a loss of cultural and political foundations. Knauss suggests that current elites and prevailing ideological views in media and science contribute to this instability.

Simultaneously, Europe is navigating a complex security landscape characterized by migration waves, uncertainty regarding US military protection, and an axis of Moscow, Beijing, and Tehran seeking to challenge the Western-led world order. These challenges, described as a ‘Zeitenwende’ (turning point), involve hybrid warfare, cyber threats, and disinformation, making the distinction between peace and conflict increasingly blurred.

In response, Germany is undergoing structural changes, including the renewal of the Bundeswehr and civil defense. This includes a shift in the mandate of the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), moving away from a decades-long focus on defensive data analysis toward more active operational capabilities.
