Western Slope behavioral health faces workforce and funding gaps

A regional assessment titled the 2026 Behavioral Health Landscape Assessment reveals significant challenges facing behavioral health services across Colorado’s Western Slope. Commissioned by the Northwest Colorado Council of Governments and conducted by Government Performance Solutions, the report highlights how funding uncertainty, provider shortages, and gaps in care hinder the ability of rural communities to meet mental health needs.

The research, which involved interviews with 26 stakeholders, found that while services have developed rapidly, they have done so independently, leading to inconsistent structures and funding. Rural counties specifically struggle with limited resources, service coverage in sparse mountain areas, and the diminishing impact of federal grants due to rising costs.

A critical issue identified is the thin and expensive provider workforce. The report notes a pattern of long waitlists, clinicians being unable or unwilling to accept Medicaid, and difficulties recruiting bilingual, particularly Spanish-speaking, providers. Even in areas where new therapists have been added, capacity constraints often remain unchanged.
