Westfalia Fruit introduces avocado ripeness technology in India

Westfalia Fruit is deploying the ‘Ripe-O-Meter’, an in-store technology designed to help consumers determine the ripeness level of avocados. The devices have been installed in retail locations across five major cities in India.

As avocado consumption grows in India, identifying when the fruit is ready to eat remains a significant barrier for many consumers. The technology allows shoppers to place an avocado on the device to receive an indication of whether it is ready for immediate consumption or requires more time to ripen.

Beyond improving the consumer experience, the initiative aims to reduce food waste. By providing accurate ripeness data, the technology discourages shoppers from squeezing the fruit to test maturity, a practice that often leads to bruising and product damage. Westfalia Fruit intends for this tool to build consumer confidence and support retail partners in generating repeat demand for the category.
