Westfield Shopping City Süd celebrates 50 years in Austria
Westfield Shopping City Süd (SCS), Austria’s largest shopping mall located in Vösendorf, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Since opening on September 22, 1976, the center has evolved from approximately 100 stores to more than 330, covering over 200,000 square meters of retail space.
Historically, the mall introduced concepts like the first IKEA in Austria in 1977. Over the decades, it has undergone significant expansions, including a direct highway exit in 1989 and a major modernization investment of approximately 150 million euros between 2010 and 2013. More recently, 25 million euros were invested in 2023 to refresh the Multiplex cinema and gastronomy areas.
As retail trends shift due to e-commerce, the mall is pivoting its strategy. While fashion and footwear once dominated, the center is increasingly focusing on leisure, health, and personal care. Future expansions include new locations for the drugstore chain Normal and a Virgin Active fitness studio, alongside space expansions for brands like Mango and New Yorker. Despite the impact of the pandemic, the center reported record visitor numbers and turnover in 2025.
