Westinghouse completes zero-power criticality test for eVinci microreactor

Westinghouse Electric Company has successfully completed zero-power criticality testing for its eVinci microreactor. The test, conducted on August 24, 2026, took place at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC), a facility located at the Nevada National Security Site.

This milestone was achieved through a partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory. The testing validated the reactor’s computational models and core design assumptions, confirming that the physics predictions for the design accurately reflect real-world neutron behavior.

The eVinci microreactor is designed for resilient energy production in remote or challenging environments, including space and defense applications. The technology utilizes advanced heat pipe technology, TRISO fuel, and a graphite core, with a design intended to provide continuous electricity for eight years without refueling.
