WestJet flight attendants eye early August strike, sign wind‑down plan

Canada’s WestJet airline and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) representing about 4,400 flight attendants have reached an operational wind‑down agreement that would be used if a strike occurs. The union members voted 99 % in favour of a strike mandate with over 97 % turnout. The strike could begin as early as Sunday, 2 August, coinciding with a long holiday weekend.

The dispute centres on unpaid ground work and the airline’s flight‑credit compensation model. WestJet says passengers with flights scheduled between 30 July and 4 August can change or cancel tickets without fee. The carrier operates more than 600 flights per day, carrying up to 70,000 passengers on peak days. If no deal is reached, some flights could be grounded by Friday, and a 72‑hour notice would be required before any shutdown. The wind‑down plan includes provisions for hotel accommodation for crew unable to return home and outlines how planes would be grounded and cabin crew returned.
