WestJet cancels Penticton flights due to wildfire safety risks
WestJet has experienced significant flight cancellations at the Penticton Regional Airport due to the Bald Range wildfire in Summerland. The airline cited safety risks and ongoing airspace restrictions as the primary reasons for the disruptions, which have lasted for nearly 20 consecutive days.
Transport Canada confirmed that a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued on August 16, restricting certain instrument approach and departure procedures at the airport. While the airport remains open, the decision to operate rests with individual carriers based on their safety protocols.
While WestJet service to and from Vancouver and Calgary has been inconsistent, Pacific Coastal Airlines has not reported similar impacts. The Summerland wildfire, which began on August 7 and caused community-wide evacuations, has seen more than 95 per cent of residents return home as of August 25. WestJet currently lists Penticton, Kelowna, and Nanaimo on its travel advisory page due to regional wildfire activity.
