WestJet flight‑attendant strike triggers cancellation of over 300 flights in Canada
Canada’s second‑largest airline, WestJet, is facing a labour dispute with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 8125, which represents about 4,400 cabin‑crew members. The union issued a 72‑hour strike notice that expires at 12:01 a.m. MT (2:01 a.m. ET) on Sunday, and WestJet responded with a matching 72‑hour lockout notice. The core issue is pay for ground duties; the union says much of the work is unpaid, while WestJet says staff are compensated through a “credit‑hour” system.
In anticipation of a possible work stoppage, WestJet began parking aircraft and reducing its schedule. The airline cancelled more than 300 flights, including 81‑86 scheduled flights on Saturday and a total of 276 flights network‑wide by Saturday evening. Flights on the regional WestJet Encore Q400 service and code‑share partners were largely unaffected. Passengers with bookings between July 30 and August 4 were allowed a one‑time free change or cancellation, and those whose flights were cancelled are being refunded or re‑accommodated under Canadian passenger‑protection rules.
The federal government, represented by Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu, has urged both sides to return to the bargaining table, but no agreement has been reached as the strike deadline approaches.
