WestJet to pay $4.5 million to settle flight attendant harassment suit

A British Columbia judge has approved a $4.5 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit against WestJet involving allegations of sexual harassment and failure to provide a safe workplace. The lawsuit, which originated from an incident in 2010, was certified as a class action in 2022.

The settlement applies to more than 3,400 current and former female flight attendants who worked for the airline between April 2014 and February 2021. After legal fees and expenses are deducted, eligible claimants are expected to receive approximately $400 to $470 each.

Lead plaintiff Mandalena Lewis expressed relief that the legal process has concluded but noted that the settlement does not constitute an admission of wrongdoing by WestJet. She described the payout as “symbolic” and felt the plaintiffs did not receive “full justice.” WestJet stated it is committed to strengthening its operations and training to ensure the safety and well-being of its employees.
