Westminster City Council ordered to increase compensation for visually impaired man

The Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman has ordered Westminster City Council to increase a compensation payment to a visually impaired man, Mr B, who was left in unsuitable hotel accommodation for 13 months.

Mr B was placed in a hotel without cooking facilities in May 2023 after declaring himself homeless. The lack of amenities forced him to rely on daily takeaway meals, causing financial hardship. Additionally, the location was far from his support network, making it difficult for him to attend hospital appointments.

The Ombudsman ruled that the council’s initial compensation offer of £3,350 was insufficient. The regulator noted that the council’s calculation of £150 per month was flawed, citing “significant factors” such as extra travel costs and the resident's vulnerability. The Ombudsman increased the monthly rate to £300, bringing the total compensation to £3,900.

Westminster City Council stated it is facing “enormous demand” for temporary accommodation. Mr B was successfully relocated to new housing in February 2025 following a formal complaint.
